Water consumption measures in Plaza Mayor
Given the drought situation due to the lack of rainfall and the low level of water reserves in multiple reservoirs and reservoirs in Malaga, at Plaza Mayor we are committed to rigorous management of water consumption. In fact, we have reduced our water consumption by 17% in 6 years thanks to the implementation of optimization measures to save water consumption. These measures, which we have been regularizing for years and remain firmly committed to their cause, we have added and implemented the following water consumption measures at Plaza Mayor.
Water consumption measures at Plaza Mayor
Raising awareness among our suppliers
Raising awareness is the basis of good water use management. The first action will be to encourage our service providers to be alert to possible leaks, discharges and thus take preventive measures.
66% reduction in irrigation
Due to the current drought situation, we have redoubled our extraordinary efforts to reduce water consumption by reducing our garden irrigation. In Plaza Mayor we have been using Sustainable Gardens for years, whose native plants are adapted to the characteristics of Malaga’s climate.
Turning off the fountains
This measure leads us to achieve a saving in water consumption of 55,000 liters per month.
Lowering of water pressure in toilets
Reducing the water pressure will result in considerable savings to reduce water consumption.
Awareness campaign in our premises
We will also carry out an awareness campaign with our premises, involving them in efficient water management, environmental awareness and consideration of such a precious commodity as water in our daily lives. Therefore, we ask you to carry out, within your facilities and as far as possible, a water consumption management, as well as to encourage all employees to participate in this general action. To this end, you can adapt the following water use measures:
- Use water consumption efficiency tools in toilets, such as perlators, faucets with timer or motion detector or dual flush cisterns.
- Do not use the toilet as a wastebasket. Avoid throwing paper or garbage in the toilet and use the cistern to dispose of them.
- Efficient use of washing machine and dishwasher cycles instead of washing by hand; it is estimated that manual washing consumes up to 80% more water.
- Identification of water that can be reused.
- Pay attention to leaks: Check the different elements of your premises that may have leaks that lead to water loss, such as faucets or cisterns, and notify them so that they can be repaired.
At Plaza Mayor we are faithfully committed to environmental care. Since its inception, Sonae Sierra’s sustainability policy has been guided by values and principles such as environmental awareness, social awareness, openness to society, trust and ethics. Because raising awareness of the importance of the proper use of natural resources, climate change and waste recycling is part of our responsibility. Together and with small gestures like these, we can ensure that the water we have available is put to greater use and gradually slow down the drought.
